• T-Mobile Borrows Apple's Playbook To Poke Fun at its Competitors ... and Apple

tmobile anti iphone commercialYou can't help but chuckle at this one... remember the "I'm a PC, I'm a Mac" commercials that Apple so brilliantly has used for the last several years. As a Mac user, I found them quite hilarious. Well in the wake of the big Verizon and Apple lovefest this week (the announcement of the Verizon iPhone 4, in case you missed it), T-Mobile needed to do something to get some attention from the media. They, and Sprint, are the carriers in the US that don't have an iPhone offering, and the iPhone continues to be THE hottest selling PDAPhone.

So in this new commercial, they get their much cuter spokesperson going in the familiar dialog with a cool guy (the Apple iPhone) and two guys in suits (Verizon and AT&T). The cool guy is feeling kind of down because he's got no 4G love for his device from T-Mobile's competitors. The cute girl then goes on to taut T-Mobiles nationwide 4G service. The commercial forgets to mention that both AT&T and Verizon have a full suite of 4G PDAPhones (as does Sprint, who was the first to the dance for 4G), so T-Mobile doesn't really have an exclusive here. But, they do have a great price on their data service which the commercial highlights.

But here's the underlying question I have... doesn't the Verizon announcement mean that AT&T no longer has exclusive rights to the iPhone? If so, doesn't that mean that there is a possibility that T-Mobile may have been able to get some version of the iPhone on their network in the future (current radio frequency incompatibility not withstanding)? Doesn't Steve Jobs have the memory of an elephant and hold grudges forever? Hmmm... this cute commercial might just keep the iPhone out of T-Mobile customer's hands for a very long time.... especially when its using Apple's on humor against... Apple!

But it is a very funny commercial. I wish that Apple would get back to these for the Mac.
