How about some Ducks and Geese

Ross has been after me to get out and shoot something for fun. Today, I met him up at the preserve and we did the dualing big whites thing. It was a lot of fun, although the wind was whipping pretty good and my hands were freezing. To appreciate these images, consider that most of them (I believe it may be all) were taking with stacked teleconverters (TC 1.4 + TC 2) and on a monopod. My 400 2.8 does not have IS, and a couple of the flying shots were done hand held (I was holding the monpod up in the air with my hand and balancing the 20 pound lens/camera on it), with the stacked TCs. So, my lens was 400 + 1.4 + 2 = 1120mm f/8. The light was pretty low, and I was shooting manual at f/8 and 1/320. ISO I believe was 800 on some and 400 on others. If you do the math on shutter speeds and focal lengths, you appreciate this lens a lot. The AF worked pretty well, but had a tendency to over-hunt. This is because only the first TC is reported to the lens, so it is using wrong calculations for AF internally and overcompensates for each move.

    Here ya go...

That goose with teh band on it's neck is part of a goose migration study. Can you report where and when you saw it to the Bird banding Labratory? "Neck bands or collars are useful to quickly locate and identify individual geese in a flock. If you should see a neck band on a goose, take note of its number, its color, and the color of its numbers. You can report the location of the band encounter by calling the Bird Banding Laboratory toll free number at 1 800-327-BAND. Your report will help gain information on the bird, and you will receive a nice certificate for your efforts."

    See http://www.wbu.com/chipperwoods/photos/geese.htm for more info.

They don't take these bands... they referred me to http://www.pwrc.usgs.gov/bbl/ for this type of band.

That's cool. I didn't realize they had moved reporting to the web.

They didn't... its just a different type of band. There are a lot of different types and each seems to have different places to report.

yeah the band the bird is wearing is a USGS band... I actually reported it 2 days ago... but couldnt help reporting it again... since it seems that migration is in a holding pattern pending the weather changes again so it seems...

Thanks Scott. I wish the in-flight shots were sharper, but with an 1120mm lens (actually 1456mm equivalent on 35mm camera), 1/320 second shutter speed, hand-holding a 20 pound camera, in heavy wind, with freezing cold, and inexperience shooting birds... this is as good as it gets! I will have to keep trying because I'd love to have a nice 16x20 of one of these over my desk, but I don't think these would hold up to enlargement.

The very first one really got me going. Looks kind of like a barefooting water skier, yelling to the boat driver to speed up.

Well all I can say is that it was QUITE a site to see that C130 touch down right in the middle of the preserve... ducks and geese flying everywhere!

You are in fact, "a bum"!

So you went back out there today and didn't invite me?

How did you get close enough to shoot without the TCs?

actually Fran wanted to demo a camera and lens so I let him take my 20D and 100-400L to shoot some birds... so we went out for the same walk... for some reason the warmer weather had the birds a little more spirited so we got a few real close up... this shot was actually kinda far off and cropped... from the main trail going back to the second pond I got a shot of one of the geese from maybe 20 feet away... full size of the view finder..

sorry I didnt call ya... this weekend if you arent working too hard maybe we can meet up for an hour or two...
