A Field Trip to Washington DC

I figured I post some shots from our 4 day trip to DC. I took about 700 images, after chimping... so this is just small selection. I wanted to travel light, so I brought a single 1DM2N, 50 f/1.4, 135 f/2, 24-85 zoom, and a TC1.4. I think that all of these are natural light and I rarely used the flash... maybe only for a half dozen shots on the trip.

    First, the Washington Monument

Now a couple from afar.... after the light had died down. Shooting natural light, handheld (no tripod on this trip) really tested the technique and pushed the limits on the Canon's low light autofocusing.

    Arlington Cemetary.....

The changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier... it was raining pretty steady when I took this shot...

And Robert E Lee's home... his living room and a view from the JFK Memorial.

The memorials... it was getting dark at this point... first the Lincoln Memorial

The Vietnam Memorial. There were a ton of people there. These shots were after dusk... really getting dark. High ISO and f/1.4 ... and manual focus for the rest of the evening.

Nice shots. I like the "late day" shots the best.

I'm headed down to DC this weekend. (Its a ten minute ride on the Metro for me so why not) The Rolling Thunder bike event is going on this weekend so it should be pretty crazy.

I can't believe the amount of people there at the vietnam memorial. When did you go?

Wish I had known you were going to be in the area, we would have arranged a Washington area PDA phone enthusiasts get together.

It wouldn't have worked... I was chaparoning a school trip... so we had a very tight schedule from 7am to 11pm every day, and we were moving around by tour bus.

Yeah, that would have been difficult. Glad you were here during the great weather. This week we have "double 90's" (90+ degrees, 90%+ humidity -- yuk)

Great photo's. Although, I must say, the Washington Monument looks ready to fall down given the color variations in the brick picked up by your camera. All the photo's look phenomenal. The low light and rain photo's are baffling. I am waaaaaayyyyyy out of my league....

Thanks... the brick color difference is historical. They started building it and had to stop because of the war. It was a couple years later when they restarted, and the bricks were a different color... so it is real.

Dave, that is an awesome image. How long did it take you to get the moon to be in the shot?

I head up the Field Trip Planning Committee for the North Bethesda Camera Club. We had this trip planned for the month of June. It took some careful planning and lots of prayers for good weather, but Mother Nature cooperated (sort of). I was hoping for better color in the sky...
