    Z-Launcher Problems?

Anyone have problems with Z-Launcher? I am beginning to suspect that it scrambles my SD cards once in awhile. I'm not positive, though. I wonder if the problem lies with moving applications to the SD card??

I have been using the latest beta for about a week and no problems yet. I run many programs from the card and move things back and forth. You might want to make sure you have the latest because they do mention that an earlier beta had issues.

Are you saying it makes your card unusable or just some apps on the card?

    zlauncher

I have been running zlauncher for a year or so and it works flawlessly for me. Tried several other launchers, by Zlauncher fits my needs. I use it with a San Disk 128mb SD card. The card is used for data storage and to launch programs from.

I tried out ZLauncher a couple of days ago as a replacement for MegaLauncher (which hasn't been updated in a while). Unfortunately, I thought it looked very ugly, mainly because I couldn't figure out how to turn off the icon title shadowing. The documentation didn't provide any indication that I could find for getting to the "Icon Setup" screen. This was with the newest beta. I may try it again in the future if I can get that figured out.

The shadowing looks great on hi res devices, but not on the 7135. The documentation I got did mention how to turn it off, though.

I find there are a few small benefits to this over LaunchEm, which I was using before. One, more control over the icon placement. Rather than just choosing how many per row and column, I can select the spacing. I prefer not having to scroll so this was a nice feature. Two, it has a built in file manager. I actually do not use this as I have FileZ on my SD card. I want to keep that because it is great to be able to use it on other people's palms. Also, you can use icons on the category tabs, either with or without text. This allows you to view more tabs at one time. The downside is the icons are not that hot and small icons are never any fun on a low res device.

The downside is it takes up more space. It is nice to be able to have different backgrounds for each tab, but after the initial "oh wow", I would rather have the space back.

Since I have paid for LaunchEm (and Facer and Silver Screen, is there a Launcher Anonymous meeting?) and only have the trial of ZLauncher, I will probably go back to LaunchEm.

    How To Turn Off Shadow

    1) Go to the upper left hand corner and click on the icon there. This will bring up a menu.

    2) On the top menu bar, select "Tab"

    3) From the Tab Menu, select "Tab Properties..."

This will bring up a page for selecting options for the appearance of each tab.

    4) From the top of the Menu, select which tab you want to adjust. It's possible to turn off the shadowing in one tab and not turn it off in others. This is helpful if you have different backgrounds for each tab.

    5) On the second line of this menu, select "Icon" to bring up a menu that allows customization of the way Icons are displayed.

    6) About two thirds down the page you will find a box with "Name Shadow" next to it. Uncheck the box. The Shadow will go away.

I have made a bunch of BMP's based on Win XP that ZLaunch can use as backgrounds.

The BMP's have to be installed on the SD card.

Once you have the BMP's installed, find them by using the "SD Card" tab in ZLauncher.

Choose the one you like. Click and hold on the file name. You will get a pop up menu. One of the selections is "Backimage"

Click on Backimage and another menu comes up prompting you to choose which tab you want the Backimage for.

Make your selection and away she goes.

I hope this is of some help.

    One More Thing

I forgot to add the Color option.

From step 5, you can also choose the "Color" option which allows you to select new colors for all the texts, backgrounds, shadows and underlines.

For instance, if you have a black text with a black shadow, I agree totally, that looks pretty ugly, however if you use a black text with a white shadow, that's much more appealing. It's also more useful if you have a picture as a backimage because it allows the text to stand out in both dark and light portions of the picture.
For instance, I use some family shots as backimages also.

It takes a little playing with, but in my humble opinion, it's well worth it.

O.K. I finally found the shadow option. On my 7135, turning it off makes the text look much better. Took a little longer to find the shadow option shutoff for the tab names, but I did... heh. Messing with the colors is pretty cool.

Now the next thing I have to do is figure out the best way to move apps to my SD card as I've got under 1 MB of main memory left. ZLauncher is taking a good chunk of main memory itself. Move some of that, too, maybe? Back to the documentation for me unless you or someone else wants to provide some more helpful hints!

    Moving Applications

Find the Icon for the application you want to move.

Tap and HOLD the icon. You get a menu to select from with a bunch of options.

One of the options is "Move To Card"

Select that and your off to the races.

Excellent! Very easy! Does that move the application and all of its databases?

My evaluation of ZLauncher is going well. On to the next couple of problems/questions:
    1) I have TealMaster (registered) as my hack manager. In its settings, I have Profile Mapping turned on with beep notification. That function automatically enables/disables hacks based on what program you are running/exiting. Sometimes when I leave a program and go back to ZLauncher, my 7135 does not beep to let me know TealMaster has done its profile switch. ZLauncher appears to be interfering with it. This problem does not happen when I use MegaLauncher.

    2) I have the tabs turned on with the "Top" setting. The active tab in ZLauncher always appears on the far left side of all the tabs when I return to ZLauncher after running a program. Usually, I have the active tab in the middle of other inactive shown tabs - allows for the fastest tab switching with minimal tapping of my stylus. I want ZLauncher to return to that exact state rather than showing the active tab furthest to the left. Is there any way to make it do that?

(BTW, I'm evaluating the 4.00B version of ZLauncher that I downloaded from PalmGear.com a couple days ago.)

I had version 3.6 and then I also downloaded the Beta version.

I like the newer version because you can have separate backgrounds for each tab.

I'm not sure about the databases being moved. I rebuilt my set up a few months ago when I got ZLauncher so I put the databases on the card manually.

I run almost all my applications from the card (about 40 megs worth), so I still have over 10 megs of headspace on teh hnadheld.

The downside is, sometimes it takes a few moments to launch som of the larger applications, such as AcidImage and pictures.

I'm looking to buy an Ultra II Sandisk (rated at 60X) I hope that makes the load time shorter.

I'm sorry, I can't offer any help with hacks. Since I began avoiding any and all hacks like the damn plague, my 7135 has been rock solid. But that's just my opinion, others seem to find hacks useful.

    As to your Tab question;
    1) Click on the Icon in the upper left corner
    2) On the top line menu, select "Options"
    3) From the Options menu, select "ZL Preferences"
    4) From the next menu, select the little house icon to bring up the "General" menu
    5) About 1/3 down the page you'll find a box with "Start on 1st Tab"
    6) Uncheck the box

    Good Luck

Thanks for the other information. On the tab issue, I found that check box, and tried setting it both ways. Neither on nor off work the way that I want. When turned on, ZLauncher reverts to the first tab in alphabetical order on my 7135, and it's positioned as the left most tab. When it's turned off, it functions as I described in my previous post, also left-most when returning to ZLauncher. Annoying, IMHO.

So, being turned off it kind of works the way I want in that the tab that was active when I "left" ZLauncher is still the active tab when I return to ZLauncher. What I want in addition to that is for the position of the tabs not to change.

    Hmmmmm

    SilvrDrgn..............

I have my tabs on the left. ZLauncher always starts on the top tab. My tabs don't change position.
I'm afraid I don't have any input that can help you.

    kirkk.................

For some reason, ZLauncher only supports jpgs on a sony. You need to have your pictures as bitmap (bmp) files. Most software programs can convert them.

The bitmaps should be 160 x160 pixels.

If you only have two or three pictures and can't convert them, post them here and I'll convert them for you.

By the way, if the pictures are in any way pornographic in nature, please feel free to post more than three. I won't convert them, but post them anyway.

In an earlier post I copied a zip file with a bunch of backgrounds that I use.

Is your top tab always the same one (i.e. the same category)??

I'll have to contact the ZL support folks. Anyway, thanks for trying to help!

Yes, my top tab is always the same category.

My tabs don't change position. I can change them but I need to manually drag and drop them into a different order.

There must be some setting for this that I haven't discovered yet.

By the way, I just noticed yesterday that Palmgear is running a special on ZLauncher right now. The price is $10.80 instead of $12 and expires on January 30th.

I've been trying it out for the last week and like Zlauncher. A 10% discount isn't such a big deal when it is already so cheap but I'm going to go ahead and register it on Monday.

    Help with Z Launcher

    Hi there:
I recently downloaded the beta version of Z Launcher and I can't figure out how to use it...for some reason the manual that came with the app isn't appearing on my computer.

    Help!

I was a long time Launcher III user. It definitely took me some time to experiment with ZLauncher to get used to it and configured in a good way for my usage.

It took some time to get the shadows turned off of the tabs and labels and get used to the icons.

Yesterday they posted the 4.0 release (non-beta). Not sure if anything much changed.

I don't see a PDF in the zip file of 4.0b8 version that I have on my computer - just an HTML file with lots of GIFs. Just download and unpack everything. For me this was a program that I actually read part of the manual (Shhh, don't tell anyone or I'll lose geek ID.

I just keep it simple without using a pretty background. I don't want to add visual clutter. My main issue was being able to have it keep some infrequently used programs on my SD card smartly by copying all of the support files back and forth. This saved me several megs of precious RAM.

All in all, it is one of my favorites on my Palm but not an easy program to get to know.

Have fun and good luck. I'm sure there are people here that know a lot more about Zlauncer than I do but I'll be glad to help when I can.
