How can I turn the phone off...permanently

Yup, it died, just like the 3 or so before it. VZW says no more so I have a 650 now.

Question is, how do I keep the phone from trying to turn on so I can use this as a Palm only?

Every time I hit the red power button, the phone tries to come on and it says "Powering On" until I soft reset.

    1) Don't hit the red power button.
    2) Open the Prefs Phone application, go to the Power section and shut off the option to power the phone on after a reset.
    3) Use the backlight button to turn the screen on and off for the PDA side.

Also be aware that if you plug it into an external power source (car charge, cradle) it will automatically turn on the phone side

I just tried plugging my 7135 into the cradle with the phone off and it did not turn the phone on.

    That did it, thanks.

You can't ever hit the red button without the phone turning on.

Really? Must be specific to your 7135. That's never happened for me.

I t keeps turning on after a few hours on it's own.

It will kill its battery trying to turn on for too long.

Do you have a program installed that turns the phone side on for you ?? Like Energy Saver or something else? If so, uninstall it.

I can't find anything that would turn the phone on.

I would love to find a wire inside to cut so at least I can give the Palm unit to one of the kids to play games.

I found another clue: it only tries to turn on when charging.

When not in the cradle, the phone stays off.

I had that happen to one of my 5 SCRP phones, it wouldnt ever stay off. It kept wanting to power on.

The only way I found to work around it was to back everything up to a card, then charge the battery by itself in the back of the phone charger cradle.

I dont think you can get around the phone turning on when you swap the battery either. Not sure tho its been awhile on that one.

I thought that's what I said! I have a vague recollection that it sez in the manual that the phone side would turn on if plugged into an external power source, aka charging. I guess if it figures your plugged int there is no reason not to turn on. Anyway that's what mine has always done... but now you've got me wanting to experiment.

Actually there is a very good reason not to turn the phone on when it is charging. I turn mine off at night so the idiots who have wrong numbers or who misdial won't wake me up in the middle of the night. I get a lot more mistakes on the cell phone than I do on the land line. My phone is charging on the bedside table at night with the phone turned off, and has never turned itself on.
