How do I send a fax with my Phone Edition?

There is no built in fax capability in the Phone Edition, and there are currently no 3rd party applications to provide it. There are companies working on a faxing solution via software. KSE's TrueFax does not currently support the Phone Edition. Watch pdaPhoneHome for news.

The only alternative today for faxing is to use one of the web based faxing services. These are not designed for small screens however, so they will most likely not be a good high use solution.

One web based solution that looks like a pretty good option is <a class="postlink" target="_blank" href="http://www.printme.com"><b>PrintMe</b></a>. It's a realitively new solution that supports printing, as well as faxing. It is device independent, which means that it works with nearly every device out there. If you are travelling and need a fax printed, you can go to the nearest PrintMe station (a lot of service bureaus like Sir Speedy have them, as well as some Hotels). You simply need to enter your login and pin, or if you know the station ID, you can route the fax or print right to that station. You can even do this over a cell phone, PDA, web, or as all of us will do... your pdaPhone! PrintMe offers a free trial to try out the service.

    Yet another alternative....

With GSM phones, you can receive faxes as well. I receive faxes on my phone all the time with T-mobile USA (have not verified other carriers). It will detect the difference between a fax tone and a voice tone, and automatically switch to receiving the fax. All you have to do is call into your vmail system for your phone and walk through the options to receive the fax message. You'll need a fax number to redirect the fax to. Once you give it the number to forward to, hang up, and about a minute later the fax will be sent to the fax # you specified. It's really cool, and you can give out your ph # to people as your fax. One caveat: If you receive a fax tone when answering your phone, hang up and ignore the next phone call, and let it roll to voicemail so the fax call can be received.

Another solution to the fax machine...
ATSONIC sweetPRINT will allow you to print to any Fax machine from your Pocket PC Phone Edition. The program relies on an internet based service (free) to deliver the fax, and can print virtually any file on the Pocket PC. For more information, visit the ATSONIC site.

KSE won't work with Phone Edition

KSE has been tried and doesn't work. An unofficial report says that the company reported that HTC didn't implement all the commands in the internal modem which are required to do faxing. There are some web based faxing services that are an alternative. I will update the FAQ with that information.

    Thanks for the comment.

    Fax

    Thanks Mike
I have the same problem with my Compaq wireless jacket. I am waiting for the new H5600 series to come out as I am a die hard iPAQ fan but am hoping they resolve the issue for then because despite the whole world using email these days I still find an abilty to fax a tool I require on a daily basis.

For those needing Fax capabilities, I highly suggest you check out www.printme.com

It's a realitively new solution, mainly for printing needs, but it does allow faxing. The cool thing is its independent of any device but works with almost all devices out there.

There is a trial account you can set up for free, the cool thing is that if you need a fax printed out, all you need to do is go to the nearest printme station (a lot of service bureaus like Sir Speedy have them or some Hotels are starting to have them) and enter your login and pin, or if you know the station ID, you can route the fax or print right to that station. You can even do this over a cell phone, PDA, or the Web.

Any one of the internet fax services listed on faxbeep.com should cover your requirements. When you use an email-to-fax service, you're basically using your handheld to send an email, and you also get your confirmations back by email. So you'd be using functionality that's built-in to the PDA for sending your faxes, and screen size is not an issue.
