Can I reprogram the buttons to do more things?

You can reload the top two buttons on an HTC made Phone Edition by using the Start > Settings > Buttons program. This will let you assign other programs to those buttons besides contacts and appointments. You can also use other programs that give those buttons other functions while running... for example Mapopolis lets you define internal functions for those buttons that only apply while the program is active.

With only two buttons, however, it would be better to be able to redefine all of the buttons, and give each button multiple functions... press has one function, press and hold having another.

    Another Alternative

    DoubleLauncher
Double Launcher gives you the ability to assign multiple functions to each of the hardware buttons on any Pocket PC. You can assign up to four functions to each button; press, press/hold, double-press, and double-press/hold (alternatively you can also triple-press for that last function). Any app can be assigned to any of these, plus it features access to the built-in functions such as record, SIP toggle, power, and showing the Today screen, which I find most handy.
