PPC Software List and Links.......The Ultimate List

I have heard from PPC detractors that there is not a lot of Software for the PPC plus I have heard alot of new comers to the PPC platform not knowing where to go to get software..so I hope this helps. This thread is just a single source for Software resources for the PPC.

I would like to keep this thread to sharing software with descriptions and links to them, more than debate them. Please stay on topic.

I cannot take credit for all the work on this thread as I have simply compiled most of these links from other posts on other boards (with a special thanks to Rubicon over at HoFo...as well as links from different threads at PDAphoneHome, TC, and SprintUsers.com). I have my own list I have added in it as well. But I will update this first post only and bump it each time I add something new to it to make the list easier to use.

    THE THREE MUST HAVES....IMHO
There are Three Software Must Haves for the 660x (which please note this is much less than my Software Must Have list for my Treo). I must also be honest and say that these three recomendations have many tools, tricks, and utilities that I feel should have been already included in a MS OS, i.e. file drag and drop or option to have close button actually close a program:

Must Have: VOICE COMMAND: ABSOLUTELY A MUST!!!! Whether this should of already been standard on the phone could be debated, there is no doubt the $30 is more than worth it. There is no voice training. You do not have to assign a voice command for each contact or software program. The program reads the names and listens for you to say it. It is ready and accurate right out of the box.

Since I don't use Voice Memos, I assigned that button for the Voice Command. You just click the button say "Call <Name> on mobile" and it calls their cell phone. It is even smart enough to confirm if it is not sure. You can even say "Launch <Program Name>" and it will launch it for you....no nav through menus or folders to find it.

PLEASE NOTE: That the Voice Command currently does not work on a BT headset....but rumor has it that it will work with 2005 OS. There are also several reported conflicts with other programs, like PictureMail.

    Must Have: SPB POCKET PLUS:
    http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/prod.../index.html?en
This is both a start page enhancement along with several OS addons (think of them as Palm OS hack enhancements).

The Start Page. Ever since I installed this, I don't think I have gone into Programs or Settings to find a program yet. This makes every program on your entire handhald available, including system utilities like connections or ringtones, all on your start page. Or you can only have your most favorite and mosted used there. You can create up to 5 tabs to organize your programs.

Please see Bob's notes below on this program as they are noteworthy to be aware of before you install this program.

    OS Enhancements.
Close Button. You can actually have the program close with the close button. You also set it up to do stuff like minimize on tap and close on tap and hold on the close button.
Pocket IE. This adds the following to Pocket Internet Explorer:
Open Link in a new Window (invalulable with the way I browse the net).
    Full screen support.
    Page save ability.
    Picture save ability
    Copy link to clipboard
Taskbar Battery Indicator. Nice and really small along the top of the unit. It does not take up any screen real estate while letting you know how your battery is doing at a glance.
File Explore. This adds the following to File Explorer (which if you Resco makes this a mute point):

    Enable ZIP support
    Enable Storage card format support
Add Properties to the context menu
    Add folder up button.
Program Manager. You can have a program manager, or least switch between running programs, added to the context menu.

Must Have: RESCO EXPLORER 2003. All I can say is that this really does give you just about every tool you have come to expect from a file explorer. Nicely laid out and very easy to use. Supports file drag and drop. Just think of it as WinXP's Win Explorer's little brother.

It also comes with the best Registry Editor I have seen on the PPC platform.

Re: PPC Software List and Links

Nice list. I'm looking for a replacement for the Palm's Crytopad and only 2 of the 5 Encryption links are valid. These don't work:
I didn't check the other categories.

There they are fixed....that is the problem sometimes with copy links from other forums, the link text is truncated and so you have to make sure you copy the Shortcut instead.

Now that you brought this to my attention, there are others with the same problem....later I will go through and correct each one.

    Thanks for the heads up.

    I would add:

On emulators, you forgot Pocket Atari. Emulates the old Atari 400/800/800XL. Works great except for Save State.

Great suggestions all. Include the links of software you want added to the list and then I could skim through the posts real fast and it would make it real easy to add them to the list. Thanks.

This is such an excellent, comprehensive resource compilation that you have put together.

It moved me so much that I had to move out from the shadows and join the board.

Thank you for this (as well as all of your other many) informative postings.

No offense, but SPB Pocket Plus was the buggiest program I ever put on my phone. It never ran slower and I have never needed to soft reset except when that program was on there, in which case I did it three times in about 5 minutes. (OK, I soft reset DosBox a couple times, but that actually doesn't work at all.)

When it was on there, even other items in my Today screen got glitchy.

I had the same problem...it totally slowed my whole system down, until I reduced the tabs on the Today Screen plugin to only 1 and limited the icons to just the most useful few and set all of them as small icons. (I only have the 4 monitoring icons and 4 program icons.)

After doing this and now runing the latest version just released a week or so ago.....and even with SPB Weather running....I do not have any of the heavy resource issues anymore.

Heck, even if you disabled the Plugin option all together, the added OS "hacks" (i.e. enhanced Close Button) it offers is well worth IMHO.

But, I do know that some have reported conflicts with Today Plus with other programs....but that is another issue.

(I noticed the same thing about Pocket Plus and deleted it with quickness. )

I'm still looking for the perfect app launcher - not changing my "Today" screen. I'd love to see some links in that category.

    Almost forgot---

HandyMenu--great little app with shortcuts to stuff like soft/hard reset, today themes/plugins, uninstall programs, and stuff like that. Puts a little button in the lower toolbar. Great little app.

Pocket Mechanic--Nice for formatting your SD cards.

SK Tools--Good for cleaning up the PPC, but I'll admit, it can be a little glitchy at times.

And if it hasn't been mentioned, PhoneAlarm from Bruce at PocketMax. Works great now, and is a "must have."

Hobbes, the link you have for the Phone Skin Chooser appears to be wonky. The url itself has the "..." in it.

Hopefully this one will show up correctly:
