Would you reccomend the sprint 6600 to your boss???

I am not going to, but I am fairly pleased with my treo 650 at this point and am a little apprehensive to risk moving to an entirely new platform. (The geek inside me is begging though as the honeymoon with the 650 is about over!) I have to admit the the treo is an 8.5/10 and with the looming patches would only get better.

The treo is a very efficient device for me at this point. There are a couple of faults, but nothing huge. For the most part everything works.

I love the idea of the 6600 and have been considering it since fall-but I use the device mostly for work (corp sales) and cannot afford to get into a situation where the device constricts my ability to communicte.

    Here are my big things;

Business connect for sprint; do I get an icon on the today screen notifying me of new mail?

SMS- treo 600/650 users; how does it compare to the treos interface?

Glitches; anything that is just an unaccpetable hinderance?

    finally...
Would you reccomend this phone to your boss/friend? Especially if he/she did not know what typically comes along with owning a device like this (i.e. posting questions on a forum on Friday night) Does it work as advertised?

    Thanks for your time-

I wouldn't. It works as advertised...for folks who have owned a PDA before or have done alot of research. It's performance out of the box would probably turn off most new PDA users...IMO. A Treo would probably score more points -- polished out of the box. The 660x is a powerful device, but it takes some serious patience and/or experience to wield it properly -- perhaps a little of both.

Unless you have time to support your boss/friend I do not recommend it. Right out of the box you have to patch the thing to get bluetooth to work. I am currently supporting my boss and 4 other people. It is becoming a full time job.

I love the device but every caveat that comes with windoze comes with this phone. You will be rebooting this phone often.

    Before the ROM update no.

    Since the ROM update Yes.

PPC-6600 needs no updates. It'sfine out of the box.

ROM update for a new owner is trivial.

Treo 650 is buggier than the PPC6600. I would not recommend that one to a boss either. Last thing I need is for it start resetting when his phone rings, or when he hits DIAL.

We joke about this on Treocentral. People consider several resets per day a nice feature, and bet it looks great when the phone goes into a reset while you're looking at that "fantastic" screen.

I'm not in the mafia, so I don't have a boss.

I do recommend (with one C) the phone to my friends.

    Thanks for the responses.

As for the treo- I am up to about a reset every other day. Usually blazer or versmail is the culprit. I have used palm phones for so long (i300 days before this forum was called pdaphonehome) that I feel like I knowthe deviceinside and out- if something happens on the road 99-100 times I am going to be able to fix it.

Should I expect more than 3-4 resets per week with the 6600? Also, how is the voice quality using the device as a handset? (no bt) Will business connect give me an icon on the today scren?

    Thanks

My phone has never reset on me since I took off voice command.

I reset it myself about once in 4 days since that fixes "whacky" stuff.

The voice quality as a handset is fine EXCEPT that it is quiet. If you use the supplied earpiece/mike it's much better, and if you use bt it's even better.

I don't know what "business connect" is so can't tell you if it will give you an icon.

I work at a large Las Vegas casino. Our president called me and had seen the xv6600 through our Verizon rep. He got one and loved it. After a week, however, he decided to get a more traditional flip phone for voice communcation. He still has the xv6600 and uses it for data, email, etc.

He wanted something that was a little more compact and easy to carry around the property during the day. The xv6600 goes home and out of town with him.

Nope, but the Luxor's a cool place. We're cooler, though

Setting up the device was trivial. ROM update was trivial. After the update everything seems to be working fine. (Thanks mswlogo for all the great info)

Here is the problem. The only reason I knew about the ROM update and what it fixed is by hanging out on this board. So if you are reading this then you are probably in good shape. My point is if
-you don't mind doing searches to understand your problems
-you don't mind rebooting your phone
-you understand installing a program can completely mess up your PPC and you may need to hard reset and rebuild
    then this phone is fine.
Like I said just like Windoze.

I am being hypocritical because I have already recommended the phone to my boss. I usually like to shake out a device before recommending it. My boss got his the same time as mine so he got to see all the problems till I got the XV6600 into a stable state. He saw all the upgrades and problems of setting up the device.

Now the thing is stable and my boss loves it with Voice Command.

Also with 5 people using the device I keep getting calls on how to do things with it.

Everyone loves it. Again the problem is unless you are willing to support your friends/boss don't recommend it. I did recommend it. I love the device. I have to spend time supporting it.

Well I have 2 ppc6000's and vx6600 and I haven't had any problems out of any. Granted I use these devices mostly for data but I have used them for a few voice calls too. I've used the treo and it's a nice device but no device is perfect and from what I've been reading the treo is far from it. I know die hard palm users who have nothing but praise for the 6600. That doesn't mean it's not without faults.

My complaints about any of these PPC phones (this is my 4th)have never been about data performance. They are indeed solid devices. But when it comes to voice phone performance they all leave lots to be desired. So, I prefer to keep my reliable flip phone with BT and EDGE support to handle my calls. I also use it to BT DUN at a decent speed.

Thus, my PPC66000 is a novelty item for surfing the web on a handheld device, emailing, and PDA functions , nothing more for now. It's not the kind of phone I would carry around everywhere I go, especially while actively jogging, biking, hiking, etc.

I came to my 6601 after a long history with PDAs (Vx, m500, 3850) so I was fairly pda-aware. That having been said, I would have no hesitation in recommending this device. I find the earpiece volume to be excellent, and the phone functionality in general to be quite usable. The one thing it lacks (voice dialing) can be added on with ms voice command. It is my only cell phone, and has absolutely amazing signal performance.
