sprint manual claims you can turn off data services.... read this???

Can I sign out of data services?
You can sign out without turning off your PPC6600, however you
will not be able to browse the Web or use other Sprint PCS Vision
services. .While signed out, you can still place or receive phone calls, You may sign in again
at any time. To sign out, tap and hold the End key for more than
    2 seconds

yeah wasnt all this alreay common sense?? perhaps you need to explain your point further? bascially, thats saying you can have a conection to vision and while there is no data being sent or received (dormant) you do not have to disconnect from the session to make or receive calls.

in contrast, if you use wireless web, you MUST sign off to use the phone.

my hitachi G could make and receieve calls while the connection is dormant... thats a cdma 1x 'feature'

I think the terminology is a problem here. You do not sign out, or log out of data service with Sprint, Verizon, or Cingular on your wireless device. You can disconnect any time by either pressing and holding the red key >2 seconds, or turn on the flight mode.

And yes, when your connection is dormant (not actively uploading or downloading) calls will come in and you can make outbound calls. But you do not need to completely disconnect from data service to enable voice calls.

Default behavior on my Sprint 6601 was that 2 second hold killed data connection AND put phone into flight mode. There is a registry change that can be made so that a 2 second hold ONLY disconnects the data connection. See the sticky.

what i was saying is, that it claimed when you held the button for 2 seconds it would turn vision and you can still use phone. so it sounded like an off button, not a flight mode button. otherwise it shouldve said hold down the button and it will turn of the phone putting it into flightmode and you ust turn it back on to use the phone and vision will be off.

You can do this if you change a bit in the registry. This is default behavior on VX6600. But on Sprint Phones the have the bit such that it goes to flight mode.

I explain how to do it in the Sticky FAQ.

    Sheesh. From the sticky FAQ:

How can I shut the Data Connection down?

    -- See http://www.smartphoneforums.com/foru...threadid=38350
    -- See http://www.smartphoneforums.com/foru...threadid=43246
-- By default holding the End call button on VX6600 with terminate data connection. To get this behavior on other phones:
---- i) You must have a registry editor like RESCO
    ---- ii) Search for flightmodeswitchbypnhendkey
---- iii) 1 means the end button puts you in flight mode. 0 means it shuts off the data connection. (credit to Ehud).

You can use PHM Registry editor, which is free (do a google search).
