Thumbs up Active Sync 4.0 is out - get it while it's hot!

So far it works like a charm! Gotta love that scheduled sync!

SprintPcsInfo gets props for bringing it to my attention:

    http://www.sprintpcsinfo.com/modules...rder=0&thold=0

and MSFT for supplying the file:

    http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...4e4d/setup.exe

Warning: It's dificult to remove, so before you try it out, make sure you create a system restore point *before* you attempt it. That way you can always back out of it!

Is it just me or does it skim quicker thru your files? I won't know the other features till I get home and have it connect with my standard partnership there.

    Any issues?

It's likely not the final build, and apparently you'll have problems reverting back to 3.x if you install this.

I had posted this news before but removed it because it's not final yet.

Also, network syncing was apparently removed in this version.

Yeah, this is why I installed it at work where I have my guest partnership - not to worried about anything other than moving files over and installing apps here. Scheduled scan seems to be grayed out as well, at least as a guest partnership.

Edit: as for reverting, that's what system restore is for. You are using XP, right?

Well I didn't want to have to deal with a bunch of "Help! I installed 4.0 and lost my network sync and now I want to go back to 3.8!" posts.

Neowin is also reporting it's been released, so maybe this is the final build... but Microsoft's site hasn't been updated yet. People are reporting this is a developer preview version--which seems likely.

One thing is for sure--it definitely removes the ability to sync over TCP/IP, so if you use that don't install this version!

New features according to Neowin (although many/most of them may only work with a WM 5.0 device):

    # Improved USB support
    # View Exchange Server Synchronization status on your PC
Synchronization of pictures in Contacts on your mobile device with Outlook
    # Easier to identify friendly device names
    # Synchronization over a Bluetooth connection with your PC
    # Integration with Windows Media Player 10
    # Enhanced user interface and enhanced new partnership wizard
    # More robust synchronization with Outlook
    # Configure synchronization settings prior to first synchronization, including custom synchronization settings

Move along, nothing to see here -

I don't think it's ready for prime time. I installed it - and when I set it to synch it worked, but added all kinds of goobledygook messages that I had to OK my way out of on the PPC. And I didn't see any options for synching any new types of info - WMP10, photos, etc.

I went back to the last version (thank you, restore!) - sheureka

Make sure to remove 3.x first.

I installed 4.0 4343 and it has the same problems as 3.8 - it still doesn't always allow you to close outlook properly - the icon still appears bottom corner and you can't switch outlook profiles till you've gone to task manager.

4.0 still does not know how to handle more than one outlook profile correctly - will use whatever outlook profile is open and asks which profile to use if your default isn't the one you want to synch with.

This could be because it is a beta or it could be because they concentrated on adding features in 4.0 vs fixing the remaining issues in 3.8

Did you follow the directions in the help files? Auto picture and music sync seem to work fine for me. (No they don't. It only worked because I had WMP10 open.)

Don't forget removing features, like network Sync. They spent some time on that, too.

I was really looking forward to sycning ALL my items wirelessly with 4.0 and my next PPC device (i730).

I saved a copy of the exe of 3.8, just in case. I downloaded it at work where I only sign in as a guest. That worked fine. Came home and installed it. It was saying Outlook needed to be repaired, so I did that and restarted the computer again. Now all is well. Actually, all is better. 3.8 was often disconnecting for no reason, not happening with 4.0.

Here's a little more info. on it from CNET:

Edit: My bad, it's mostly on WM 5.0, but there are some notes there.

So, I installed it again. New problem - have any of you gone to "add/remove programs" ? Is every single program grayed out? - sheureka

Eww Sheureka, that is not a fun problem to have. I just checked my add remove proggies for ya, and my list populates just fine even after the upgrade. Sometimes that is spyware related.

P.S. I noticed someone mentioned earlier to remove the old activesync first, I did NOT do that, just installed 4.0 and it acknowledged I had a previous version, and offered to upgrade me, it also kept my settings, so literally this was a no brainer.

    Good luck!

I think I'm giong to restore again and then just install the new one over the old one. I uninstalled 3.8 before I put this on. Thanks - sheureka

Although you can install it over 3.8 and it did work for me. It did have some issues with discovering the device if I tried even though it was synching. The 4.0 looked different after I uninstalled removed the directory and reinstalled. I don't have any screen shots so I can't tell for sure what is different but I THINK but do NOT recall that the options button wasn't at the top.

Under the options menu, do you have an option for Media sync?

Well, I installed it on my home pc where the standard partnership existed and it sync'd up as usual. Nothing new to configure. I do think maneuvering thru the folders is a lot snappier now. I am doing a back up to see if its any faster, while it does seems to be faster than 3.8 (probably due to better USB support) but not as fast as compared to Sprite. Other than that and some improved GUI its not that much different. But you know me, I have to have the latest, so I'm happy I took the plunge!
