My phone says EV instead of 1x

    Hello all,
I have Verizon service and where my phone normally shows a 1x for the signal type it is now showing an EV....what does that mean?

    thanks,
    Eddie

Where are you located? What that means is your area has now activated EVDO which is the high speed data network. To confirm point your browser to
    http://www.broadbandreports.com/mspeed

You should see around 200-500kbps if you are getting EVDO data speeds.

Verizon is trying to keep ahead of Sprint so they are increasing their EVDO coverage AND raising their speeds. Their EVDP speeds are, or soon wil be 600 -800 kbps ... just enought to beat Sprint's 300-500 ... if and when Sprint gets theirs up and going.

I live in Daytona Beach, FL and the Verizon reps here said it would be available in March. Then something delayed it, and here it is almost July and we still don't have it. Yet they keep saying deployment is "imminent". I'm wondering if it isn't going to be included in the expansion of the Orlando and/or Jacksonville market. We are considered in the Orlando market for voice.

I have been pulling 600-1000 on Sprint's network, I think your 300-500 is a LITTLE off!

I was being conservative. I don't like getting people's hopes up. Plus I don't know in new areas how Verizon is limiting bandwith. Also, skippyrq, I think that the only other person sharing your EVDO bandwidth is luv2chill. I'd like to know what the deployed bandwidth will be. I truly hope it will be 600-1000 when fully deployed. Tha would force Verizon to compete and make us all happy.

Let me say this, when I first started, and EVDO was first deployed in So Cal, the bandwith was 230-400kbps. When the Sprint Rollout was rumored, my bandwith jumped to 300-600kbps. Consistently I am over 300kbps but depeneding on what time of day it is and my location, I can get higher.

So, let me say, if you consistently get over 200kbps on the mobile speed test on PIE your EVDO is probably turned on. Smile and enjoy the bandwith.

VZW just recently expanded their EVDO coverage in Southern California. It appears to cover most of the Inland Empire and High Desert areas which is great for me!

EVDO does not equal more bandwidth.

EVDO means it has a higher maximum bandwidth throughput.

The carrier still has to upgrade the tower from the orginal bandwidth to more bandwidth. In the small cell tower, that's going from 1-2 T1s to 3-4 T-1s. In the larger towers it's a lot more bandwidth.

So.. remember, having an EV signal means the maximum is higher, not that there's actually extra circuits deployed at each tower _at_this_time_.

The problem in Louisville KY is they are trying to get it up and running here. I'm constantly switching from 1X to EV all day long. My battery last about 1/2 as long as it used to from searching for a signal. Sometimes I'll turn on the phone and it won't find a signal for ten seconds or more.

I hope they get it fixed soon. I hate getting down to 20% of power left by 5pm every day!

...and I'm hopeful all the carriers who offer EVDO stick to that same philosophy... I just know they won't

If it's not violating some NDA... could you let us know which carrier(s) you've been working with and in which area(s)? I have to admit my preference in vacation travel is to EVDO areas

No NDA, it was with Verizon Wireless in North and South carolina, mostly around the 85 corridor.

John, are you on Verizon or Dan's hacked Sprint PRL?

Woah. Okay. I apologize for breaking rule number one.

I think that was factual....I've been to Knoxville!

I was actually at that World's Fair. Of course I was 13, and instead of soaking in the culture, I spent my allowance at the midway games! Speaking of, did you know all the midway workers come from Knoxville...

Actually, Knoxville is a great town, as is nearby Gatlinburg...
