Controlling your PC through your PPC?

Has anyone had any luck with www.logmein.com ..........I cant seem to get it to work on my PPC. I think the browser needs to support Java. I also tried it using netfront but after it allows me to download the remote controller and I run the program, It doesnt seem to see it. It just keeps wanting to download it again. In PIE I cant even get it to a point to download the controller. ANyone have any suggestions or maybe another program that is free. Thanks.

Do a search for "remote" or "console" or "VNC".

Logmein works but you have to disable all Today page plugins then soft reset. For some reason Today page plugins interfere with PIE being able to start the Logmein plugin. I have an xv6600 in an EVDO area and it works great, I can control remote PC's really well.

As Ehud recommended above, use VNC. It can be downloaded from RealVNC.com for desktop. For PPC, just search the web for VNC for Pocket PC and there are a number that are free as well...
I use it and it works great!

Well, I figured out the problem. I had PIEplus installed which tells sites you are using a regular Internet Browser 6 and wouldnt allow it to work. I uninstalled it and logmein.com works great now.

Capteeou: I have an xv6600WC with ROM 2.03.00 WWE on Verizon’s EVDO network. When I use logmein, I get to a webpage that says “Setting up your computer - please wait”. The page instructs to “click here” if I do not receive a prompt to “install” after a couple of minutes. I have never received the prompt on any attempts. Therefore, I click the provided link and get a page that talks about “site security” and whether I want to proceed. Clicking “proceed” I’m taken to a page that says “Now connected to [computer name]” and asks for the username and password I use to log on to the targeted computer. Once I input my username and password, PIE shows a logmein webpage with 3 links -- “Home” “Remote Control” and “Disconnect”. When I click “Remote Control” there is no response from the PDA. If I click “Disconnect” then I’m taken back to a logmein webpage that contains "my computers" (i.e., the targeted computers to which I want to connect to via my 6600). For what it’s worth, when I sit in front of the targeted computer, I can see the logmein icon activated by some of the data I input, but the icon stops responding at the point I reference above.

Reading your post above makes me think I wasn’t able to start the logmein plugin you reference. Therefore, I went to Settings--> Today --> Items and unchecked all items. I then did a soft reset, but still no luck. I called logmein support and they said the xv6600 won’t work with logmein which is, obviously, not true based on what you are saying.

I also tried logmein via Thunderhawk and received a message stating “active x and java controls are not enabled in your browser” which is a problem that was previously raised here

Finally, I've used logmein from my home computer to my work computer (i.e., the one I'm trying to access above) and it works fine.

Any thoughts on how I might resolve this would be appreciated.

    Best,
    MA

Logmein works for me too. We don't have EVDO yet. As mentioned by others, I usually disable all major plugins (e.g. Pocketbreeze, Wisbar, etc.) A quick reset before accessing logmein usually works.

I've never been able to get VNC to work. Maybe it is because I don't have a dedicated IP address.

One more thing you could try is to clear your pie cache then soft rest. That was something logmein support told me to do awhile back. Amazingly now logmein works even with my today page plugins active, weather panel and todaysinfo.

I've been using the Terminal Services Client that shipped with the device...VNC...and the new version of pcAnywhere.
    All seem to work fine.

Capteeou: I did what you suggested and still no luck. I even reinstalled the Logmein software. Query: are you using the paid version of Logmein?

    Thanks to all who responded.

Nope I'm using the free version. If I had to take a guess I would say there is some software installed on your ppc that the logmein plugin doesn't get along with. You could try uninstalling them one by one and find the culprit. Pain in the butt though

Thanks. If I could impose on you a little more, any opinion as to which of the following might be the culprit? Alternatively, if you have any of these and logmein works, then I can probably rule them out.

    Adobe Reader for PPC 2.0
    AOL IM 2.0 (UK version)
    TapText
    Macromedia Flash Player
    Resco Explorer 2003 + Registry Add-in
    Autostep
    Sprite Backup software

Terminal Services or VNC is def. the way to go, as for people without static IP's, get a dynamic DNS like www.dyndns.org, it's free and works very well!

I have Resco Explorer and Sprite backup.

If I had to guess about which to uninstall I would go with Adobe Reader, Macromedia Flash Player, Autostep and finally Pocket Informant, in that order.

I use VNC and pcAnywhere as well as Terminal Services to connect to my servers/client computers/office and all three work without issue on my xv6600, as long as I have the ports redirected in the firewalls/routers to the appropriate computers...

(The last part is a given, I know)

    I'm a Verizon XV6600WOC user and successfully use both LogMeInPro.com & Terminal Services w/VPN.

On a side note...I demo'ed the Avocent SonicAdmin product on my old Dell Axim X5 over WiFI and it worked great. When I tried loading it on my XV6600 it wouldn't work. I went round and round with their tech support and finally reached a 'carrier' specialist who informed me that it would not work. Too bad, because it's possibly the best product for remote PPC administration that I've seen.

Capteeou: Thanks for the recommendations. Logmein support sent me the following:

“To better determine the cause of the problem, we'll need you to turn on extended logging. LMI debug logging can be switched on under Preferences->Advanced Options. Once you have selected the option and applied the changes, Logmein service needs to be restarted. You can do this, if you right click on Logmein's icon in the taskbar, and select Disable Logmein - then a minute later enable Logmein. Also, you can do this remotely by going to Preferences > Reboot options > Restart Logmein. Please note that your PC will not be accessible for about 2-3 minutes after the restart. If you could try to reproduce the error after this and then send the log files from the LogMeIn folder along with the time you tried, it would be very helpful.”

If I'm unsuccessful with Logmein support, I’ll try uninstalling my apps. Logmein worked on my 6600 during the “trial’ period and I really liked it. Hopefully, I can get it up and running again.

The Terminal Services Client that comes with the 6600 works fine. However, from what I can tell, you navigate your desktop screen using icons that change the portion of the screen being viewed which I don’t care for.

Though it’s been said many times, many ways… This is truly an incredible community of people and database of knowledge. I just hope someday a poster gets a recording contract or a publishing agreement or something where I can answer questions instead of asking them.

    Best,
    MA
