    Antenna connector for PPC-6600

Anyone know what the connector is for a PPC-6600. Nothing on the audiovox site. These guys:
    http://www.discountcell.com/cellular...-1240,1c,p.htm

say that it is not an FME connector. Any ideas. I badly need an external antenna at home since reception is terrible in this device (but not my old i500)

If you search around deep enough in these forums, you'll see some threads by people who tried it, and broke the internal antenna on the 6600, rendering the device useless without an external antenna.

I'd suggest finding that thread before trying anything.

Like Byron said, some external antennas have been tried and reported to break the antenna connection. (Not just the external antenna connection) thus rendering the device a pda, not a pda phone.

I couldn't find the thread either but I do remember reading it. I would recommend against any external antenna because what breaks is the antenna connector, so no matter what type of external antenna you connect, you have a chance to disconnect all (internal and external) antennas.

I would suggest you look into a repeater of some kind instead, overall your experience with a repeater will probably be much nicer than with an external antenna... More expensive for sure but less risk of breaking the phone, and it would eliminate the need for carting around an external antenna...

Abe, I noticed what you were looking at is only 800 mhz. For the same price you can get dual band (800 & 1900).

    http://www.digitalantenna.com/cellamprep_DA4000SBR.html

    Here's one for $395.

    http://www.gpsandmarineworld.com/da4000sbr.html

Now to find a site with a good return policy should it not meet my needs.

/edit Ok your first link is dual band for approx. $600 and your second link is 800 only.

Is that direct connect to the antenna or a wireless repeater? I dont like the idea of having an antenna connected directly to my cell phone...I might as well get a land line.

I just plug it into the back of the phone and attach the "paddle" to the side window of my car. Is that a bad idea?

Yea, that connection on the back is weak. Be careful with it because if it breaks, it breaks your internal antenna as well.

The funny thing is - I'm getting ready to move cross-country, and one of my requirements for my new house is signal strength! This is clearly insane, isn't it?!?

Of course, I can't reveal this to my wife. Imagine this conversation: "Well, honey - I love the house. The commute is great, the schools are good, and the price is reasonable, but fieldtrial.exe is showing a 20 db signal. Let's go live next door to the crack dealers instead!"

Maybe I should look into a repeater and save my marriage
