meaning you probably got a fake card. if you paid a fraciton of what the MSRP is, then you probably have a fake card.

put it in another card reader.. if it shows the same thing (less than 3GB) you have a fake card.

double check the sellers feedback and see if they have sold many SD cards.. if they have sold other items (books, CDs.. other junk!) then i woudl be suspect..

there are a lot of fakes SD cards being sold on fleabay. 90% of them are from china...

try reformatting the card too. But yeah, chances are its either defective or sold under false pretenses.

Reformat it as FAT32 (via your PC with the card reader). If he stuck it in a camera that only supported FAT16, then it may have been reformatted as such in that device.

    Read up three posts.

Do you have a card reader?

    Do you have a PC?

Does it show up on your PC as a drive?

    Can you format it?

the wording of the post in ebay seems fishy... he said he got it for his son and his son said it was too small to carry around... if you have a 4gig sd card you aren't carrying it around at all... that's your main card in what ever device you are using... so I call BS on that ebay item and wouldn't have purchased it.

FAT16 supports 2^16 clusters with a cluster size of 2 to 32 K, so the max for FAT16 is 2.5GB. I am not sure, off the top of my head, what cluster size flash devices use, so theoretically the issue may still be that the device was formatted as FAT16 rather than FAT32.

    To format it as FAT32:

    1. Put it in a card reader on a PC (if as Ehud said above you have a PC and a reader).

    2. In explorer, right click on the drive letter for the card reader and click on Format.

    3. For File System, make sure FAT32, not FAT is selected and that Default Allocation Size is selected, then click Start.

    4. When the format is complete (which will only take a couple of seconds), right click on the drive again, then click on properties to display the capacity of the device.
