default number dial when sending Text messages

I had sprint turn off sending my caller ID when I dial the phone. However, for my preferred contacts, I want to show Caller ID so in my Contacts, I have *82 stored with the phone number.

The problem is when I send text messages to those preferred contacts, it automatically picks the mobile phone number with the *82 prepended to it. I can't send text messages that have *82 in the number.

How can I automatically pick the telephone number I want to send a text message to?

    mac,
i have my number set to private thru sprint. i was under the impression that your number shows up anyway when you send a text message regardless if you have your number private/blocked or not.

but to test, i just set a number in my contacts using *82 (*82xxx-yyyy) and when i went to my sms app, i picked the number with the *82 in the beginning and it sent the text just fine. so im not sure what issues you arte having....

my phone is also a private number. I just tried sending a test message to (*821650xxxxxxx). It sent out ok but a minute later, I get a receive:

"Your MSG could not be DELIVERED because Invalid Destination Account"

If I remove the *82, then the message goes through fine.

what app are you using to send text messages? i use the palm app. maybe that does not matter, but i added a *82 to a number thats in my contacts (i did it to two different contacts) and when i begin to type the number in, the results start popping up and then i see the number i want with the *82. the text app does not show the *82 on my end and it sends out just fine.

lets compare more notes because im able to do it just fine.

but, as i said earlier, i thought that when you send text messages form your phone, even though your number is private, it still shows up on the other end with your number...

I'm not sure the palm app works the same as Windows mobile app.
I'm using the CONTACTS in WM6 in both my Touch and Mogul. Once I select the person I want to Text to, I select it and choose Send Text Message. It automatically defaults to the mobile tel.# (and I already have *82-1-xxx-xxx-xxxx programmed in). Once in the text message, I cannot erase the *82 off of the number - I can only send to that number OR completely delete it and enter a new number. As mentioned - sending ANY text to a *82 prepended number results in an error.

It doesn't matter if the other end sees or doesn't see my number when texting. I just want a private number when I manually dial people who are not in my list of Contacts.

I haven't tried my Palm Treo to see if *82 works or not - it has been removed from Sprint service right now.

mac, ok so your using the built in app!
grab the treo text message app. the one pulled form the treo 750 (i think thats the one). when im entering someones name in the app, the results popup and i can choose what number i want to text to. i think thats our difference here.... i can see the default app doing what you are saying, but this treo app is great, plus its lists the messages as "chats" like gmail does...
