    To my understanding, it updates the phones software to ensure you are using the best tower for your area. Could be wrong, but this is what Verizon told me long ago.

    the 99 on the end goes straight to the option 1

    Actually it goes to option 2 which updates the tower information... but Verizon only updates every 3 months..

    I get poor reception at my house now, and I've heard horror storys of bad reception turning into NO reception after *228. I'm not willing to take to the chance as I know its a bad area.

    I never understood why we had to do this manually. After all, my cable box updates itself just fine. I consider myself ahead of the curve and I would have never known to do this unless I read it here.
