    MASSIVE data bill

I am posting this here because I seem to recall issues with data overages when this phone first came out and the fact that my fellow i760 users are superior to the rest of society.

I obtained an overseas usb data unit from Verizon for one of the doctors at my office to use while in Austria. This was a one month deal and Verizon included 100 minutes with a 20 dollar/meg (!) overage charge. This was the only package they had and I made sure the doctor was aware of the situation. "I am only going to check my email" he says to me... Anyway, Verizon fraud calls me a week later and says that the account has reached just over 2 gigabytes or FIFTY FIVE THOUSAND dollars ($55,000). Now I was a pretty pissed off that they couldn't call me at... oh... I don't know... $1000 (!) but that is where we stand. Has anyone else incurred an outrageous overage from Verizon and if so was there any fighting it?

Two gigabytes just from mail? That seems like someone misplaced a decimal point. What kind of timeframe did this occur in?

Technically you could rank up 5GB of bandwidth a day if you were downloading at 500kbps every second for 24 hours.

Either your Doctor was lying and was downloading huge files (or being emailed huge files), or something is wrong with the phone, or Verizon billing is wrong.

Oh no, He tried to pull a study (~50meg) and he said it failed about 20 times before he gave up. He assumed since it didn't complete then he somehow got to do it again for free... The man has an MD...

Wow! That sux! For $55K I would have flown the study to him myself!

Since this is legit I have no idea what you could do. i would try begging with Verizon and or make your MD foot the bill.

I know it is a day late and $55k short but I would never have trusted anyone with this unless Verizon could put a physical cap on the usage.

Well this isn't on my head or anything since I set it up on his account but, being one of the partners, he does pay a portion of my paycheck so....

    VZW: Hello eldersoul?
    eldersoul: Yes?
VZW: eldersoul, we are calling to beg you to stop making us tons of cash for no good reason.
eldersoul: Oh, well I'll get right on that. Thank your for calling.
VZW: No, thank you. Is there any other ridiculously overpriced services that we could lose profits on today?

That kind of stuff scares me. This is why I'd never sign-up for a limited or pay/kb plan. If I got a bill like that I'd likely just stay in Australia.

If what he sez is true, that he was trying to just down load an email attachment, or a 50meg file, and the resulted an immense bill reporting 2GB of usage and was continually getting disconnected. Then you may have a case that there must be something wrong with the data connection and it generated a billing error. I think that you need to stress that you were having issues with the connection at the time, and the service was not what it should have been. I don't know if it is possible to start a data session and get disconnected in such a way that the meter is still running, even though you established a new connection. If the data tracking system is broke and you get enough of those running concurrently and you could rack quite a bill. Just a thought

I have a simple philosophy. Never trust anyone. Especially with technology. The same guy who promises you up and down that he will use your laptop only to check email will bring it back filled with trojans viruses and porn. And an overseas data plan in the hands of someone who was not a technophile was just inviting disaster. Its not IF it will happen but WHEN.

I have read a few places and can find them if needed. Many people that have the "Unlimited" found out it does in fact have a cap on it by Verizon. After the said "cap" is reached then you are charged like if you don't have any kind of data plan. They all have HUGE bills and are pissed off! I am still going to move to AT&T and sense VZW has to unload a lot of there customers according to FCC and I read that AT&T is going to pick them all up.

Not as bad, but this reminds me of a text messaging bill from heck back before V offered unlimited texting.

I heard this from a Verizon service person a few years ago. This lady's daughter had a fairly large text messaging feature on her account but the 2nd month she used her phone she ran up a $4000+ texting bill (Mostly incoming spam texts, as I recall that her phone number was posted on some web site). According the the V rep, she had to pay it.

The V rep told me about it because i was complaining about my kid's $150 texting bill. When I signed him up for texting a few years ago, the rep told me that as long as they didn't READ the messages there would be no charge for the incoming messages, so he just ignored them after he reached his limit that first month. V showed no mercy and charged me the $150 since I did not have a recording of the conversation with the other V Rep. We blocked texting during that complaint conversation and kept it blocked until they offered the unlimited plan.

$.10 per txt works out to approx $750 per MB. seems kind of steep to me.
Especially since they charge .10 per txt, even if it only says "ok"

$20/megabyte for overages? Holy crap... Satellite is cheaper. I use BGAN portable satellite terminals and they're only $6/mbyte anywhere on the planet. Damn.
