RANT: Camera isn't the best on this phone...

Well, I just got this phone today, and man... its camera just isn't gonna cut.

I've had a Cingular 8525 and hands down the 8525 wins on this particular category. I'm just bit pissed cuz after Samsung made a mistake of not putting a camera on the i730, I thought they'd put something a bit more useful than this.

Here is a example of what a 8525 can do:

and a close up (macro mode):

And now here is the one I took with i760:

and a close (no macro mode):

I'm not a professional photographer but don't you have to have the same pictures from both devices to compare them? The upper ones are outside and the lower ones are inside. Light can make a huge difference.

I was talking about the focusing....

And I will take a few pix tomorrow with the i760 to have a better comparison for you all.

It's a fixed-focus lens, and seems to prefer more distant subjects than you have chosen. Does anyone know what distance it is dialed-in for?

That said, I agree it's not going to replace my pocket camera.

Also, it seems that if I press the Sleep/Wake button on the 760 while the camera viewfinder is live, the phone crashes. Or at least, the screen image does not return. I have to yank the battery.

Bravo, you've discovered that a 2 megapixel camera will take clearer pictures than a 1.3 megapixel camera at bigger sizes

Honestly, did anyone else NOT know this already?

Yes, but I wasn't talking about knowing/not knowing. I clearly said that I'm pissed because Samsung has done it again with "not completing" the package.

Oh, and I forgot to mention, I'm also talking about clearness of the picture quality, not just the size. A 1.3MP cam "CAN" take a clear pic with a proper lense. Yeah...

With that said, I guess I'm gonna go try out the 6800 that's coming to the store on the 5th next month...

Yes, its a cell phone, not a camera. It would be nice if it were better, but it takes good enough pictures for emergency use, which is all it should be for. I have a 10 megapixel Canon that takes really nice pictures. It was about the same size and cost as my i760. It doesn't get very good cell coverage though.

Is it just me, or do those pictures look too good to be a 8525? In the reflection, you can see the photograher holding something that really doesn't look like a 8525.

It's a PDA, not a camara....under that thinking, your lousy Infiniti isn't the complete package, because it's engine doesn't perform like that of a Ferrari's....does that make your car any less complete? no, it's still a car....just like the i760 is still a PDA

Can't you read Indie? It's a RANT. LOL

I know it's a PDA. I know it's a phone. What part of rant do you not understand? And why is my car involved here?

The reason I'm "dissappointed" here is because I do use the cam a lot on the phone when I had my 8525, and I "hoped" that i760's cam was comparable to that of 8525's. Do you understand now?

And yes, it is a PDA.

It is 8525 with macro mode. It IS that good. That's why I'm comparing these two. I hope i760's cam is at least a little bit better with the zoom function.... IMO, Samsung could have at least put the manual macro switcher like 8525 for this phone...

EDIT: Try to save the pix to your computer and check the property of it, it should say HTC and Hermes under the equipment brand and camera model.

Every car, camera, phone, PDA, and especially every convergence device is a series of design and manufacturing compromises. It would be nice if the i760 had Rev A, a VGA screen, functional GPS, free unlimited data, or I guess even a better camera. But for $49, I'll save my rants for more imporrtant things. But you go ahead, by all means!

Those who purchased the phone when it was first officially released online got an unexpected pricing error from Verizon, which allowed us to stack the NE2, ADD, online discount, and MIR for $350 off.

EDIT: Here's the thread (The How Much, How did you order the i760 Thread)

Is the zoom on the i760 optical or digital?

I don't think the i760 has either. Digital zoom is pointless anyway.

But I think the 8525 has a 10:1 optical zoom, Carl Zeiss 28mm wide angle with telescopic quick chane lense. And I hear it also makes pretty decent cell phone calls.
