Can't remove "Emergency Download in Progress"

My phone shows "Emergency Download in Progress." I searched this and other forums and found only the advice to remove batteries. I soft reset, hard reset, then removed the batteries for 20 hours, so everything should be clear. I get the initialization screen with the stylus but then get the "Emergency download" screen again and can do nothing. Sprint claims they can't do anything unless the phone is working, but also say they've never heard of installing new firmware, so clearly, despite her assurances, she doesn't know much about this phone. Help, please!!!

    Addendum

I spoke to the Sprint repair center, which says they have no ability any more to provide a firmware update for this phone.

You can upgrade the firmware yourself. See: SAMSUNG CDMA FIRMWARE THREAD!!! (hopefully) - Page 13 - Mobile Files dot com

Ignore the links at the top of the article, you want to download UniPST 2.535 which is attached to the bottom of that article.
