New Media Player... anyone know of a DVD ripper?

    Hi all,

Just picked up an Epson P-2000 media player today. It is primarily for photo storage, as I only have a couple of CF cards and this thing has a 40GB drive and 3.8" display. I'm headed to Florida for vacation in a couple of weeks and would like to be able to shoot away without worrying about pulling out the laptop.

I have the Makayama DVD to Pocket PC program, and was hoping to be able to load this thing up with movies at 250MB a piece... but it doesn't support WMV files. Does anyone know of a piece of software that will rip a DVD, convert it to MPEG4 (.mp4, .avi, .mov, or .asf), and resize it for the smaller display, all in one program? I would like the same one click functionality of DVD to Pocket PC. Alternatively, is there a way to convert the .WMV files easily?

    Making Movies

If speed is an issue this isn't going to help. But for the cheap way to get movies onto your pocket pc here's what I use, all free. I like the divx format, quality is good for the size.

Here are my solutions. All Free. Its two programs but pretty push button.

Sinister and Ivan... I'm really looking for a one program solution... but there may none available.

Marty and Ivan... This device can'd do Divx or WMV, which is what this program will produce. I have to have MPEG4 encoded output.

The device so far seems pretty good. It will do what I bought it for pretty well, although it could be better. I primarily want to dump my files from my CF cards quickly in the field. I generally shoot RAW+JPEG and this is something that could be better. It dumps both into the same directory, which makes running a quick slide show not the best. It autorotates one, but not the other... so you not only get duplicate images... you also get one horizontal and one vertical (if you shot vertical... which I do a lot since I shoot a lot of sports). You can select a set of files from a card to make a slideshow out of, it just takes some time.

The display is absolutely gorgeous, and a good size for display. It some with a little stand and has a nice looking slide show transition mode so you can leave it on your desk as a rolling slide show.

The speed is probably good, but I'm used to the Nikon D2H preview speed which is near video speed. In fact, we did a claymation video for a school project the other night, and I could run it at nearly video speed in the camera display... with 4MP files. So, I'm spoiled with the speed of the camera, and this device is a bit slower.

But, like I said... for what I bought it for, it is great.

    No DivX! What's the point?

    This looks one step.
