    Inventory Sale--CompUSA closing stores nationwide

On March 1, 2007, a bunch of the CompUSA stores in the Phoenix area started a sale that was advertised as an inventory-wide sale. Everything in the store was on sale for up to 20% off. I stopped at a CompUSA on March 2 and was told that more than 100 stores nationwide are closing. For example, the sales clerk told me that all CompUSA stores in Arizona, other than 1 store in Tucson, were closing. Thus, prices will continue to be reduced until the stores are closed.

Just wanted to give all my friends at PDAPhoneHome.com a heads up in case they would like to catch the going out of business-type sale.

Geeze .. .. there are two here in Sacramento... and they always seem to have a crowd. I wonder if they are on the chopping block... I know there must be a demand for Techtoys.. Fry's is getting ready to open another store (that'll make two) in our area soon.

edit... both stores in the Sacramento, Ca will be axed!

One of the clerks told me that the company is privately owned and that the owner felt he wasn't making enough money so he decided to close more than 50% of the stores. I have no idea how accurate this info is.

Update: I went to my local CompUSA last night. A lot of stuff had been marked down by 30%, including cables, KVM switches, USB hubs, and iPod and other portable music accessories. Software, keyboards, mice, digital cameras, digital memory, and videogames were still 10% off. iPods were still 5%. A sales clerk told me expects laptops to get down to 40% off "in a couple of months."

iprob, your pretty much right. the owner is not making money off the compusa stores in areas that have frys, best buys circuit citys, etc... online sales are killing the B and M stores and his investors are beginning to see the compusa franchise as a loss and he is bascially dumping the low yield stores and keeping the highest yield stores alive..

And to find out what's left, go to the store locater and punch in your zip code:

    Or check the master list

    Thanks for the info.

Although I've never been a big fan of CompUSA (I have never found their staff particularly knowledgeable or helpful and I despised the fact that prices were never clearly marked on the shelf or the product), I am sorry to see CompUSA closing all of its Phoenix stores. First, if you didn't mind filling out the rebate forms, you could get some real good deals. Second, CompUSA has always carried a much broader array of computer products than Best Buy or Circuit City. In fact, CompUSA was one of the few places in Phoenix that carried Apple computers and software and supplies for Apple products.

Now, I'll have to go to Fry's Electronics for my Apple stuff and even for my more generic computer stuff. The bad news is that Fry's is about a 30 minute drive from my house (compared to 10 minutes to CompUSA). The good news is that I'll probably save a lot of money because I won't be shopping for tech goodies nearly as often.

haaaa... yeah i posted that also just above your post!

yeah iprob (imac guy? ya think? ), i agree with you on compusa. the folks there was not the best apples in the bunch but you could get a great deal.. i purchased a external 500gb seagate drive and it qualified for a 60 dollar rebate. i got the rebate a couple days ago and i submitted the "ebate" online and it took just under 2 months to get the rebate..
most of the time though, they were higher priced and they did have a large supply of hard to find stuff that you could only get online..but at a cost! so me , being impatient as i am, i would go there and pay a few bucks but i got it then and not have to wait for shipping... but yeah i may have to go to frys..

if you have time and want to read what others are saying, theres this photography website, dpreview, thats speasking about compusa.. they make some good points...

So far, I've only read the first two pages from the site, but I find most of the posts very interesting (and fairly accurate). I'm like you in the sense that I often need my "fix" when I need/want it, and don't have the patience to wait a couple of days for delivery from an online retailer. I also like to touch, see, and feel a product before I buy it. I also don't want to worry about the hassle of repacking and reshipping something to return it (for some weird reason, it seems like less of a hassle to stop by the store on my home to return a product). Thus, I rarely buy online.

Maybe I'll get lucky, and they'll open a Fry's a little closer to my house, but I doubt it, especially now that the competition has been reduced.

    What's a geek to do?

Ours was spared... but most in NY are being closed. There will only be two left that aren't in NYC. As much as I dislike CompUSA, it is the only game in town for stuff around here and I often need things and can't wait.
