Considering Treo 650, currently an i500 user

I have been using my i500 for over a year. My i500 is still in perfect condition, but I am growing bored with it. Also, with the delay of the i550 I am now considering the Treo 650 as a replacement. What is the general consensus of the Treo 650? Is it worth the $ or should I hold on to my i500? I love the design of the i500, but I am very drawn to the camera/video feature of the Treo 650 and the downloadable ringers.

I had the I-500 for a year also. Was a great phone, until I got the treo 650. no comparison. It's almost impossible to email from the I-500. no keyboard. Thats the first major problem. Also, the screen is kinda small and there is no bluetooth.
Just my 2 cents worth, make the trade

It is all about SIZE and protection: open brick vs. small clam shell.
Get an Ipod and a camera for fine music and good pictures.

    DO IT!

I made the switch less than a week ago......and am very happy.

I was beginning to have some major problems with the 500's battery (less than 1 hour talk time per the 'extended' battery--non roaming talk), very poor signal regardless of signal strength, and speaking of.....very poor signal.

I had the Samsung 300 and 330 before that and have come to the conclusion that it's time to write off Samsung. While I love the size of the 500, it just doesn't work.....and Sprint refuses to work with me on it. Its difficult to do much in terms of ringtones, and anything else with graphics, etc, requires unofficial hacks. Really, in this day and age there should be more options.

So back to the 650......one main point. I'm currently in a remote part of Northern California. I was lucky to get ANY signal up here. When I did, the calls would drop out more often than not. I've just had a 35 minute conversation through areas where I've never had a signal before.....and there was only a one minute period where the signal showed any breakup.

Sorry to prattle on. Yes, it's larger and I'm sure the screen will suffer for it. But it's much better in so many ways......and that's only after a few days.

By the way, how the hell does Sprint get away with still trying to sell the Treo 600 for $599????????.....I've noticed that everyone else has dropped it to $399. They tried to offer a trade for the i500 but taking the 'obsolete' model made no sense at all.......I'm sure they were happy to get rid of their stock now.....

    Enough said....

    Charles

Thanks for in input, guys! I'll take each of your suggestions into consideration before I decide to make a purchase or not. One thing I am apprehensive about is the keyboard. I had the Kyocera 6035 before the i500 and am very comfortable entering text using Graffiti. How does the keyboard on the Treo compare as far as 'ease of use' is concerned?

Maybe my thumbs are too large or I just have internalized touch typing (and do not "know" where the keys are, my fingers know my brain does not, or something like that)---I find grafitti especially with short cuts much easier than the thumb board.

Also for me, the form factor is a very big issue (small and protected).

    Good luck, let us know,

I'm just requested a Treo 650 to be shipped to me. My store doesn't stock them yet. I'll play with it for a few days before I make a decision.

I was in agreement with Blazorboy for a long while.

After the i500, "when will you ever come out fiasco", and with the i550, the writing was already on the wall, I decided I was not gonna wait another Samsung product. I have had the T650 now for 4 weeks , carry it in a horizontal Covertec leather holster style case.

I LOVE IT! It is not that big or heavy. Interestingly, I carried the i500 in a case that rode a ways off the hip making it catch on every darn thing. This phone, horizontally, in this case which tucks it in tight, if anything feels [I]smaller![I] than the i500

The screen is awesome. Pocket tunes for mp3 and shoutcase streaming radio is unbelivable. With Pocket DVD and MMplayer, playing full length movies on that screen is fantastic. After getting used to the thumb-board and the 5way navigator, I will NEVER go back to grafiti. I can do anything on the t650 with one hand and NEVER take out the stylus.

As to the bluetooth, personally I could take it or leave it. Nice to have in case I need it and syncing by bluetooth with my notebook is pretty cool.

The memory problem is not that big of a problem. With Z launcher I have tons of stuff on the phone and on the card and still have 9.5 megs of RAM left.

The phone is stable. Few crashes. OMG, after the I330 FSOD debacle, this phone is a joy.

Anyway, I have been very happy. I may look at the i550 if and when it ever comes out but will think a lot before giving up the thumboard

Good luck. BTW, don't forget to go to Treocentral when you get it. A fantastic resource.

    Pocketability

I was on same page as Blazorboy for a long while; I saw the i550 at Samsung Experience in NYC and it is too fat to be pocketable, in my opinion.

I agree that the i500's best attributes are screen protection through clamshell design and size. Personally I'm hoping for a clamshell with vertical keyboard someday. I don't know why everyone makes a QWERTY keyboard when you can't touch type on the thing. We all learned Graffiti; I'm willing to learn a new keyboard layout if it helps the device ergonomics.

However, I'm starting to get tired of the i500's limitations--specifically, no SD slot so I can load more apps on it, and the need to use it two-handed for just about anything other than making a call or checking the build in PIM apps. The i550 did appear to have better navigation integration, but as it's fat and delayed...I've soured on the idea.

So. What I want to know is this: is the 650 reasonably pocketable? As in, front jeans pocket? I'm willing to keep it in a pocket with no case all by itself (that's what I do with the i500), and I'm not that worried about the screen--these devices have a max life for me of about 1.5 years anyway. No belt clips for me. Is it any smaller than the 600? I do think the 600 fake mockups I see in electronic stores are bricks.

I'd go try it out myself but I doubt my local Sprint store has one to play with. Or okay, yeah I'm too lazy to check.

hmm. i just compared these measures:

    650: 2.3x4.4x0.9", 6.3oz
    i500 w/thin battery (what I use): 2.1x3.4x0.8", 4.8oz

650 is 59% larger in cubic volume and 31% heavier. Since I think of the i500 as certainly acceptable, but not small, that's not too good...

But, I do agree with you BB, it is definitely not front jeans pocket fodder. Too long and wide and not really a problem till you try to sit down. Works fine in pant with more capacious pockets, tho.

So uhm.... For those of you that made the jump... Did you get Sprint to pay part of the Treo 650? Or did ya'll pay full price for the upgrade??

Now, since I am considering the same switch, and I haven't really played with it yet... Can I be dumb and ask some basics?

Can I jack in a 1 Gig card and use it to play MP3's? How about video? Can I rip a dvd and put it on the card? View it? What resolution? Any extra software needed? How's the switch? Easy to get your hotsync going to the TREO instead of the Samsung? Is there a cover for the screen? Is it a touch screen btw?

SO many questions, so not wanting to go to the sprint store at the mall during christmas insanity days...

(Edit, I answeded ur question inside the quote above)

Def. rec you go to Treocentral.com and look at the multimedia section and the Treo 650 hardware section. Sure, some probs with the phone, but I LOVE IT. Did i300-i330-i500 Samsung thing and am the happiest with the phone of any so far. The screen is absouluely gorgeious. The movies on it are truly unbelievable.

Go for it, I say. And yes, I paid the full admission price, but feel it was worth it.

As for the size, who cares. Any phone is big, get the one with better features. Goes into a case with a clip anyhow. BTW, the treo actually syncs every time I press the button. The I-500, usually I had to try and start sync 3 or 4 times before it would actually sync. My time alone fooling with that is worth the difference in size. Besides, how the hec are you going to send email from the I-500. It's not practical. Takes 20 mintues to get out a sentence since you have to do it by pressing the small letters with the stylus.
    peace out.

Is that besides the 150 instant rebate and 30 internet rebate they have on sprintpcs.com right now?? Oh baby. How sweet that is.

I am going to wait until I get my tax refund I guess. I gotta stimulate the economy with that.

Hmm. Dude. I use the graffiti thingie and I rock on it. Write a whole 20 word sentence in a minute flat. I use it for mail all the time!!! I love my i500!

But I think it will be easier to use the 650 while driving, checking messages etc. The i500 always requires two hands. Can't use the PDA while using the phone unless you have a cord hanging out of your ear.

    Can't wait to use bluetooth.

As for blue tooth. Does it recognize voice dialing commands??
