How to transfer your data from your old Palm device to the Treo 650

This procedure describes how to tranfer your contacts/calendar information and 3rd aprty software apps from your old Palm device (7135, Treo 600, etc) to a Treo 650. Note that not all software program settings and preferences will be transferred over but that cannot be helped. This is the cleanest method I know of of transferring the data so as not to corrupt the 650 with files/settings specific to your old device as well as takes care of the problem of 3rd party software being locked to the username on your old device. Whatever you do, do NOT simply sync your 650 to the username currently assigned to your old device as this will result in files/settings specific to your old device being transferred to the 650 causing unnecessary memory to be taken up on the 650 as well as making the 650 unstable. If you have any suggestions as to how to improve this guide, please send me a PM. If you have questions about the guide, please make a post in the forum so that others may help you. 1. Locate your "Backup" folder (usually located under C:\program files\Palm\(your username)\Backup) and move it to a new location you will remember like your desktop or somewhere else, just move it out of the "Palm" folder

    2. Uninstall the current Palm Desktop software, reboot.

    3. Install the Palm Desktop software from the CD that came with the 650.

    4. Sync your old device (7135, Treo 600, etc).

    5. Change the username for your old device to something different. From the Palm Desktop software, click on the drop-down menu in the upper right-hand corner and select "edit users". Highlight your current username and then select "rename" and change it to a new name. Sync your old device once more. Now go back to that same "edit users" menu and select "new" and type in your old username that you had just changed, this will now be the username for your 650. Click "ok" to close the window.

    6. Sync your 650 and when the window pops up asking which username to sync with, select the username you just created (which was previously your old username for your old device).

7a. If you opted to use Outlook when you installed the Palm Desktop Software and had been previously using Outlook with your old device, your contacts and calendar should now be transferred over to your 650. If they are not, sync again.
    b. If you opted to use Palm Desktop to sync during the Palm Desktop software installation, follow these steps:
    - from the drop down menu in the upper right-hand corner, select the username currently assigned to your old device, then click the "contacts" button on the left-hand side of the window
    - click "select all" then "copy" from the "edit" menu in the upper left-hand corner of the window.
    - from the drop down menu in the upper right hand corner, select the username currently assigned to your 650, then click the "contacts" button on the left-hand side. click "paste" from the "edit" menu in the upper left-hand corner. you should now see all your contacts from your old device.
    - sync the 650 and the contacts will be transferred over to the device.
    - you will need to beam over your calendar entries from your old device to the 650 so make sure beaming capabilties are turned on for both devices, this is covered in the manuals for the devices if you are not sure how to do this.
    - on your old device, go into the calendar/datebook app, and click "select all" from the "edit" menu. Note that on some devices, the "edit" menu will not appear unless you are in the single day view (as opposed to the week or month view).
    - click "beam category" or "beam event" from the "record" menu. this will beam over what you have selected to the 650. choose to accept the files when the 650 prompts you. perform this procedure for the rest of your calendar/datebook entries. don't forget to turn off the beam option when you are done to conserve battery life. sync the 650.

    8. Now locate the old "Backup" folder you moved to a new location in step 1. Open it up and you will see all the applications from your old device. Click on ONLY the 3rd party software applications you would like to install on the 650. Do NOT click on any of the device specific apps like the address book, etc. When you click on the apps, a window will appear asking which username you would like to install for, select your 650 username. Do this for each app you wish to install then sync the 650.

    9. Go into each registered 3rd party app on the 650 and enter in the registration code for each program. You will need the emails you received with the registration codes the company sent you when you initally purchased the app. If you do not have them, you can usually reobtain the registration code by contacting the software company and asking for it.

    10. You're done.
