Type Option-S (to get the "-" character) and then hit the Alt key. A popup will show and the underscore should be the first item in the list.

Hit the Option Key (the key that has just a blue blob on it, found in the lower left hand of the keyboard), then press S to type a hyphen, then hit the 'ALT' key (to the immediate right of the space bar). This will bring up a menu of alternate characters for the hyphen, and underscore is the first one on the list.

And if you plan to use that character frequently in an upcoming sentence, such as My_Very_Long_File_Name.doc, you are free to select that underscore you typed, and copy and paste it as you write.

Or is there a way to make new shortcuts? I see that the shortcut "loop" character is also on that list created by typing Option then S (or s), and the built-in shortcuts such as ts still work.
Why can't you be a nonconformist like everybody else?
