    Its a little complicated

650 come in 2 flavors, GSM and CDMA these to are not and never will be interchangable. The hardware in these two phones is different. But among the phones of the same standard, the hardware is the same only the software and housings will differ. In theory, a phone of a different carrier could be loaded with a new ROM, (which can be dangerous) somebody technical would be needed from the carrier you want to go to give you channel and roaming info, and last but not least, the ESN must be registered on the new network before it can be activated, you need to be related to someone who can do this(no store employee can do this), and then maybe, you might get it to work. None of this is a problem with the unlocked GSM version, this 650 will not have the logo of its service provider on it, and can be changed between carriers.

So does this mean there is no way to unlock a treo 650 at all?

If it is a Sprint of Verizon (which are CDMA) there is not an "unlock" feature.

If it is Cingular or T-Mobile I believe there is. These two use SIM cards that can be swapped between units, IF they are unlocked.

You will need special unlocking codes that need to be provided by a computer. Its gonna cost you about $15 bucks. The people I mention above provide very easy to follow instructions.

    You will need the following.

    A PC
    A non-firewalled internet connection
A SIM card (that does not work)
    A hotsync cable

    That's what it takes.

A SIM card? I thought Sprint used CDMA, not GSM.

If you are thinking about converting to Verizon, check out this thread:

And here is a newer thread about the serial cable you'll need:
Serial cable data for treo 650?

I've never done this on a Treo 650, but a similar process worked well on my Kyocera 7135.
